Research and Development

The Research and Development Unit at the Emergency Services College is responsible for the coordination of the research activities of the rescue services. To analyse needs of research, to collect information by following studies made and by summarizing research and development programmes in Finland and abroad, and to make studies independently as well as in cooperation with other research institutes are included in the tasks of the unit. The main focus is to contribute to improve the use of the research results in the rescue services by integrating the result in the curricula of the Emergency Services College.

The Emergency Services College also administers the commissioner tasks of the Finnish Fire Research Board. Further, the unit is responsible for the maintenance of the assignment register data system (PRONTO).

The Research and Development Unit employs three full-time employees. Moreover, about 10-20 persons take part in the research and development programmes every year.

  • the development of the society and the rescue services as a part of this development
  • accident prevention
  • the methods of the rescue services
  • fire research
  • dangerous substances and environmental risks
  • other accidents
  • the working capacity of an individual and the work load
  • the application of information technology
  • teaching methods and evaluation of training
  • preparedness for emergency conditions
  • human behaviour in accidents
