Emergency Response Centre Operator

ERC operator

The ERC operators who work in emergency response centres answer the emergency calls coming in number 112. The calls may relate to an acute illness or injury, traffic accidents, crimes, incidents that threaten law and order, fires, or social emergency situations.

The ERC operator finds out what has happened and where, gives the assignment a risk classification and then alarms the help needed to the accident scene. The operator also has to assess the health risk of the patient with the help of information given of the situation and the incident, recognise social services emergencies as well as the need of help given by rescue or police authorities.

The demanding work of ERC operators includes interaction with people in crisis. The operator gives advice about first aid, fire extinguishing or other instructions if needed and also supports the alarmed police or rescue units in their work on the scene. The operators work in three shifts.

An expert operator should be able to work independently, make decisions logically, act ethically and interact with other professional groups. A wide knowledge of customer service and team work skills as well as the ability to operate demanding computer systems are essential to be successful in this profession.
