Finnish capacity in the field of UN training was strengthened as CMC’s Training Specialist Outi Lappalainen acquired trainer certification for the newly updated United Nations Pre-Deployment Training for peacekeepers in November.
From now on, Lappalainen can train future peacekeepers in the framework of UN Pre-Deployment Training Materials (CPTM) which serves as a cornerstone in preparing peacekeepers for the complex realities of modern missions. Designed for military, police, and civilian personnel, the training ensures that all UN peacekeepers share a unified understanding of the organisation’s values, mandates, and operational standards.
At its core, the training promotes professionalism, ethical conduct, and respect for human rights. It equips personnel with essential knowledge about the UN Charter, peacekeeping principles, and the legal frameworks that guide their actions. The training emphasises the protection of civilians, gender mainstreaming, child protection, and the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse, which are critical areas in today’s peacekeeping landscape.
The pre-deployment training also fosters cultural awareness and collaboration. Peacekeepers learn to engage respectfully with local communities and coordinate effectively with international partners. Through interactive methods such as case studies and simulations, trainees develop practical skills in negotiation, conflict resolution, and community engagement.
Developing Police Competence and Recruitment for Civilian Crisis Management
Enhancing the capabilities of national police officers in line with UN principles improves their ability to operate effectively in multinational missions. Training supports police expertise in areas such as community policing, safeguarding human rights, and preventing conflicts.
The training can also assist in recruitment processes by preparing police officers for civilian crisis management roles. Through training, it is possible to identify and develop the competencies required for international assignments, such as cultural awareness, collaboration skills, and the ability to operate in complex security environments.
For trainers, CPTM offers a structured yet adaptable framework to deliver impactful learning experiences. By integrating the training into national training programs, trainers can ensure consistency, relevance, and alignment with UN standards. Ultimately, the training empowers peacekeepers not just to maintain peace, but to build it ethically, collaboratively, and sustainably.
