Course description

HEAT is an intensive course aimed at training professionals to deal effectively with high-risk and emergency situations in hostile environments. The completion of HEAT is a prerequisite for any mission with the risk rating ’high’ or ’critical’. These missions currently include e.g. Central African Republic, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Niger, Somalia, South Sudan and Ukraine. However, HEAT training is valuable in any civilian crisis management operation. If you intend to apply only for low or medium risk missions or Secretariat positions only, you do not need to complete the HEAT course.

CMC Finland will offer course closing dinner at Jämijärvi on the final day after course. The official check-out will only be on the following day, after which participants return to Helsinki. If necessary, transportation to Parkano railway station can be arranged on the final day by 19:00.

Please be aware that CMC Finland reserves the right to change, cancel or postpone any and all training and its proposed elements if necessary. 

Aim

The training is expected to improve participants’ understanding of the minimum behavioural field requirements when working as a team member of an international field operation irrespective of their national or professional background.

The overall objectives of the course are:
(1) to improve participants’ knowledge of multiple threats present in hostile field environments and of ways and means of dealing with them in an effective manner; and
(2) to rehearse and practice safety and security procedures according to specific threats.

Target audience

The target group for this training is civilian crisis management mission staff selected for, recently deployed, or expected to be deployed to low / middle / high / critical risk area missions, who have not yet completed a HEAT course or their previous HEAT certificate is outdated.

Persons, who have have participated in the Basic Course in Civilian Crisis Management (BCCCM) or equivalent training (appointed by CMC) and have not completed HEAT course before, are also encouraged to apply.

It is expected that the participants have preferably attended at least a general introductory course on civilian crisis management operations, or gained relevant experience in international field operations.

Participation fee

• For applicants that have participated to CMC Finland’s Basic Course in Civilian Crisis Management or equivalent training (appointed by CMC), course tuition fee, full-board acommodation in shared team cottages & rooms and travels during the course are covered by CMC Finland.
• For other applicants, the course fee will cover tuition, meals, accommodation and travel during the course. The course fee for HEAT 1-2023 is 1800, for other courses yet to be confirmed. Once confirmed, the fee will be invoiced after the course.

Application deadline for each HEAT will be confirmed once the call for applications is open. Please apply to the course by filling in the Webropol form published in the call.
